The Linux Professional Institute (LPI) is a global not-for-profit organization whose mission is to enhance, develop and further lifelong professional technology careers in Linux and Open Source technologies. Founded in 1999, LPI is recognized as the standard for vendor/distribution-neutral testing and certification of open source technology skills and is offered in thousands of locations, in multiple languages, worldwide.
LPI offers a graduated level of testing and certification from the entry-level Linux Essentials Professional Development Certificate (PDC) through the Linux Professional Institute Certifications (LPIC) 1, 2 and 3.
The LPIC program is designed to certify the competency of IT professionals using the Linux operating system and its associated tools. LPI certifications are designed to be distribution neutral, following the Linux Standard Base and other relevant standards and conventions.
The LPIC program is designed to test the proficiency of IT professional on multiple levels according the demands of their role and responsibilities. Determining which tasks were suitable to each level was done using a "Job Task Analysis" (JTA) survey. As with all of the LPIC exam development processes, the JTA was developed and executed using recognized psychometric processes, to ensure its relevance and high quality. Therefore, LPI certification is appropriate and recommended for all levels of IT professionals including system administrators, code developers and software engineers.
